Jerod Mayo provided an update on Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye’s status after concussion

After leaving the Patriots’ eventual win over the Jets on Sunday with a concussion, it appears Drake Maye could return to the field for New England’s next game on Nov. 3 against the Titans.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo revealed that the 22-year-old Maye remains in the concussion protocol.

“Drake is in the protocol,” said Mayo. “He will be a limited participant today in practice. So in saying that, yeah he will throw the ball at times in practice today, but he will be limited.”

Patriots fans can breath a sigh of relief that Maye is able to at least be back on the practice field. As for what it means for his possible return, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted the possibility of a full return to the field in time for the game against the Titans. “That means he, at least, has a chance to play Sunday,” Rapoport said of Maye.

Other Patriots reporters, including Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald and NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry, pointed out that Mayo’s description of Maye’s current status gives the impression that the rookie quarterback is in the third stage of the process.

Mayo noting that Maye would practice not practice for more than 30 minutes was seen as an indicator.
“Some language overlap between Phases 3 and 4,” wrote Callahan, “but the time limit is a key difference.

Officially, the league’s “return to participation protocol” establishes that in the third step, “The player is allowed to return to practice with the team in sport-specific exercise for 30 minutes or less with ongoing careful monitoring.”
