Olympic men’s gymnastics results: Team USA earns bronze in team final, on podium for first time since 2008

The American men finished on the podium for the first time since 2008, winning the bronze medal in the team event after excelling on all six apparatuses. Japan claimed the gold for the second time in three games, and China came second after leading for the majority of the meet.

With multiple hit routines in each event, all five USA gymnasts contributed massively to their medal effort. Brody Malone came back from a disappointing qualifying and hit his routine on high bar, where he struggled most. Frederick Richard, Asher Hong, and Paul Juda had huge days, as well, each nailing routines on their four apparatus.

It was Stephen Nederoscik who played the hero on pommel horse, however, with the specialist coming in to compete in the team’s last routine, sealing their spot on the podium.

Pre-meet updates, commentary

11:20 a.m. — There will be a different gold medalist from Tokyo this year, as the Russian Olympic Committee is not competing. China won the bronze in the team event in Rio in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2021. Japan won silver in 2021 as well as gold in 2016.

11:10 a.m. — China and Japan dominated qualifying with scores of 263.028 and 260.594 respectively. Great Britain finished third, just about four points below Japan. Ukraine (fourth) and the Team USA (fifth) were neck and neck, finishing just 0.664 points apart. China and Japan are heavy favorites for the gold and silver, but the race for third will be suspenseful as well.

10:45 a.m. — As a reminder on how scoring works in the men’s team final, three athletes from each team will compete on each apparatus. All scores will be included in the final tally, and the team with the highest score wins.

Individual scores are calculated based on execution and difficulty. Execution scores start at 10.0 points, with judges deducting points for errors, such as extra steps on landings, falls, flexed feet, bent knees, etc. Difficulty scores starts at zero, and athletes earn points for composition requirements, difficulty of elements and connection value. In men’s gymnastics, each routine receives points for the 10 most difficult elements.

10:15 a.m. — We are just over an hour to the start of the men’s team final. USA Gymnastics announced the starting lineup for today’s event with Brody Malone competing in five out of six apparatus. The American men are seeking their first Olympic medal since 2008.
